Home Composting

***

Home composting is the first line of regenerative agriculture. Making the decision to compost kitchen scraps means being part of the solution to our environmental problems. We use an American composter from Smith and Hawken, and we have had success with the Biostack®, although dogs can knock the stacks over unless they are supported at the sides. We add food scraps to the top, cover with straw and water. Red worms are added. We harvest dark fertile soil and worms from the bottom of the composter and use it to amend plantings.

Here's our American composter in action. Note the sheet of steel under the composter, which directs nutrient runoff to a banana plant.
